On July 1, 2007, the Consumer Product Safety Commission's Federal Mattress Flammability Standard, 16 CFR PART 1633, was established and went into effect.  The standards establish performance criteria for all mattresses and mattress sets manufactured, imported, distributed, or sold in the United States of America.  All mattresses and mattress sets must meet two specific criteria.  Under the first portion of the standard, mattress/mattress sets must not exceed a 200 kilowatt (kW) peak heat release within the first thirty (30) minutes of the CPSC "Open Flame" Burn Test.  The second criterion is the total release of energy must not exceed fifteen (15) megajoules (MJ) for the first ten (10) minutes of the CPSC "Open Flame" Burn Test.--Source:  CPSC 16 CFR PART 1633.

What is a Megajoule?

Named after James Prescott Joule, the joule is the SI unit of energy.  It is used to explain the relationship between heat, electricity, and mechanical work.  One joule is the work done, or energy used, by a force of one newton moving an object one meter along the direction of the force.  A joule is, also, the work done to produce power of one watt continuously for one second; or one watt second.  A megajoule would be one-thousand SI joules!
